Today: From Zero to Baby-Carrying Hero; Saying No to Innovation?

ISSUE #065

Good Morning! Sippers,

When Chinmayie Bhat was pregnant with her second child, she struggled to find a baby carrier that would fit her lifestyle.

So, she decided to make her own! With her husband Ravindra, she started Soulslings in 2014, making ring slings with locally-available fabric and selling them through a Facebook community.

In today’s Issue 📬 :

  • From Zero to Baby-Carrying Hero.

  • Saying No to Innovation?

The Bumpy but Triumphant Journey of Soulslings Founder Chinmayie Bhat

🚀 A Rapid Rise: The ring sling was nowhere to be found in India, so Soulslings quickly saw a huge demand for their unique product. Bhat set up distribution and retail networks across the US, Europe, Singapore, and Malaysia. By 2019, the company was selling in almost 30 countries and had launched several varieties of baby carriers for newborns, toddlers, and infants. 🌟

😔 Challenges Amidst the Pandemic: But then, COVID-19 hit. Almost overnight, Soulslings’ international sales dropped to zero, which accounted for about 80% of their business.

Bhat also lost her husband to depression, leaving her to run the business and raise their two children alone. It was a tough time for her. 😔

🏋️‍♀️ Reviving the Business: Over the last two years, Bhat has been actively revitalizing her once-thriving enterprise. She first established an online presence and launched a D2C website, along with re-engaging with her customer base.

Despite facing stiff competition from other baby carrier brands, Bhat believes there is still room for growth in India’s market. The company is introducing a new range of baby carriers and partnering with a hospital to organize a workshop for new mothers on baby-wearing. 🌟

🌎 Eyeing the International Market: Bhat is also reconnecting with distribution and retail channels internationally to revive their export chain and rebuild the business she had lost. She wants Soulslings to be back in the international market soon.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the baby carrier market is projected to register a CAGR of 5.08% over the upcoming five years, which presents a huge opportunity for Bhat and her team. 👀

🙌 Overcoming Adversity: Chinmayie Bhat’s journey as a mother and entrepreneur has been challenging, but her resilience and determination to succeed have kept her going.

Today, Soulslings sells 500-600 baby carriers a month, which is a significant improvement from zero sales in 2020. Her story is a reminder that even in the toughest of times, success is achievable with hard work, dedication, and a never-give-up attitude. 👊

Saying No to Innovation? Steve Jobs Says Yes!

As an entrepreneur, it’s natural to feel like you need to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.

However, as Steve Jobs once said, true innovation often involves saying “no” to many good ideas in order to focus on the best ones.

In fact, a study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco found that people who multitask are less productive than those who focus on one thing at a time.

The study concluded that trying to juggle too many tasks at once can lead to increased stress, decreased productivity, and even damage to the brain.

This is why it’s so important to prioritize and focus on the most important tasks.

As former CEO of General Electric, Jack Welch, said, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”

One example of a company that has successfully prioritized and focused on its core mission is Amazon. When Amazon started out in the late 1990s, it was an online bookstore. However, founder Jeff Bezos was always focused on the bigger picture, which was to create the world’s largest online marketplace.

Today, Amazon is a behemoth that sells everything from books to electronics to groceries.

Another example is Dropbox, a cloud-based file-sharing company. Dropbox started out by offering a simple solution to a common problem: people needed an easy way to store and share files.

The company could have easily branched out into other areas, but instead, it stayed focused on its core mission of providing a simple, reliable, and user-friendly file-sharing service.

Today, Dropbox has over 700 million registered users and is valued at over $10 billion.
