Lost in Translation? Delhi-based Startup Kalakrit Offers Human Touch to Localization Services

👉 The Inception: The industry’s inflexibility in accommodating customer requirements that deviate from the standard translation approach is what pushed Kohli to start Kalakrit in 2021 with an initial investment of Rs 20,000.

On one project, for instance, the client wanted the content translated into 12 Indian languages while keeping the written script in Roman, which wasn’t possible with traditional translation methods. Kohli had to train a team of freelancers to transcreate the content, which inspired him to build a company free from boundaries and flexible enough to mold as per client needs.

💼The Business Model: Kalakrit specializes in marketing localization, BFSI, and sworn translations, as well as voiceovers in various Indian languages. It has worked on over 350 projects across 150 languages, providing pre-delivery and post-delivery assistance to clients. The startup charges project-based fees or a one-time fee for a specific project, and a fee-for-service charged by the word.

📍Localisation at Its Core: Localisation involves adapting content, products, or services to meet the cultural and linguistic preferences of a specific target audience in a particular region or country. Kalakrit’s localisation services include translation of the text, audio, video, or multimedia content into the target language(s); adaptation of images, graphics, and other visual elements to suit the cultural preferences of the target audience; localised testing and quality assurance, as well as cultural consulting and guidance.

👉 The Future: Kalakrit generated about Rs 11 lakh in revenue in FY21, Rs 34 lakh in FY22, and Rs 7.5 lakh in the last month. It plans to add about 120 brands to its list of over 50 brands by the end of this year and is projected to generate Rs 1.5 crore in revenue by the end of 2023.

Kalakrit’s team currently consists of 10-15 people, and it has signed contracts with 7,000 linguists who work on a two-year term basis.

🧑🏻‍🏭 While the translation industry is witnessing the impact of generative AI tools, Kalakrit chooses to remain true to its 100% human-based solutions. With its focus on marketing localization, BFSI, and sworn translations, as well as voiceovers in various Indian languages, Kalakrit is providing pre-delivery and post-delivery assistance to clients and adapts content to meet the cultural and linguistic preferences of a specific target audience. As the startup plans to add more brands and generate more revenue, it remains committed to ensuring quality by using only native linguists and artists in its projects.

Minimalism: Finding the Goldilocks Zone of Possessions

Minimalism is a lifestyle choice that has gained popularity in recent years. It’s about living with less and simplifying your life to focus on what truly matters.

But it’s not just about having the least amount of things. As Joshua Becker, the author of “The Minimalist Home,” said, “The goal is not to have the least amount of things, but the optimal amount of things.”

Determining what the optimal amount of things is can be challenging, as it depends on your goals. For example, if you want to travel frequently, having a minimal amount of possessions that are easy to pack and carry might be your goal. On the other hand, if you have a family, your optimal amount of things might be different, as you need to consider the needs and wants of multiple people.

Colin Wright, a blogger, and author decided to embrace minimalism and live a location-independent lifestyle. He got rid of most of his possessions and only kept the essentials. As a result, he was able to travel the world, live in different countries, and pursue his passions without being tied down by material possessions.

Another example is the story of entrepreneur and author Tim Ferriss. In his book “The 4-Hour Work Week,” he emphasizes the benefits of minimalism and simplifying your life to achieve your goals. He writes, “Focus on being productive instead of busy. Eliminate low-value activities.” By getting rid of unnecessary distractions and possessions, he was able to focus on what truly mattered and achieve success in his personal and professional life.

Minimalism is not about having the least amount of things but finding the optimal amount that aligns with your goals. You can achieve greater fulfillment and success by simplifying your life and focusing on what truly matters. As the philosopher Confucius once said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
