Straight and Narrow Path to Entrepreneurship

The recent podcast guest of “Launch Your Business”, Alex Schlinsky, is different. He bypassed the traditional 9-5 route and immediately pursued entrepreneurship. The reason behind this decision was that he thought there was a chance he might die at a young age.

🤔 Life or Death Experience: They didn’t want to make it overly dramatic, but they believed that imagining feeling like you don’t have a lot of time left could encourage someone to truly live for the day and make the most out of the time they have left. Fortunately, one doesn’t have to go through a life-or-death experience to take more control over their future.

During the interview on the Launch Your Business Podcast, Alex shared the lessons he learned and some key takeaways:

💡 Key Takeaways

  1. The power of persistence in getting where you want to go in life.

  2. How to build a robust and lucrative online community.

  3. Why the “hustle hard” mentality makes no sense (and what you should do instead).

🚀 Pursuing Passion: Alex’s journey to entrepreneurship started with a diagnosis of a congenital heart defect at 18. Knowing that he would have to undergo open-heart surgery at some point in the future, he wanted to make his time count.

📚While studying psychology in school, he also ran a business on the side. After graduating, he threw himself into his passion for local sports and pursued media credentials with the Miami Dolphins.

Despite hearing every single objection in the book, Alex persisted and called the Dolphins media department every day for two months straight. His persistence paid off, and he ended up covering the season for the team.

💸 However, it only yielded about $500 for his coverage, so he turned to the business he had accidentally started during his last year of high school, which was managing Facebook pages for personal injury attorneys.

🤝 Community Building: Fast forward to today, Alex now runs a community called Prospecting On Demand, which offers mentorship for agency owners, digital marketers, coaches, and consultants looking to scale their businesses. He emphasizes the importance of building a robust and lucrative online community, which he has successfully done with Prospecting On Demand.

🛑 The Anti-Hustle Movement: Alex also got to the anti-hustle movement unintentionally. He hustled himself into burnout at a young age, which led him to rethink his approach.

🧬He realized that always striving for more doesn’t necessarily lead to a fulfilling life. In fact, it can leave the business owner feeling a lack of clarity, always churning towards bigger accomplishments (whether or not that actually adds benefit to their life).

📈 Scaling: For Alex, scaling means knowing when enough is enough. It’s about setting realistic goals and achieving them without sacrificing everything that matters in life. He has since built a successful agency and community, and he hopes to help other entrepreneurs achieve the same level of success without sacrificing their well-being.

Embrace the Power of Solitude: Why Time Alone is the New Superpower

As our world becomes more connected and our schedules become busier, taking time alone has become a rare and underrated commodity.

However, studies have shown that time alone can be a powerful tool in helping individuals figure out what they truly want in life.

According to a study conducted by Harvard Business Review, people who spend time alone tend to have more meaningful relationships, greater creativity, and a better sense of self-awareness. Additionally, research from the University of Virginia found that people who spend time alone are more likely to engage in introspection and personal growth.

One case study that illustrates the benefits of time alone is that of Sarah, a successful businesswoman who found herself feeling unfulfilled in her career. Sarah Friar is a prominent business leader who serves as the CEO of Nextdoor, a private social networking service for neighborhoods. She is a strong advocate for the power of time alone and has spoken publicly about how it has helped her in her career and personal life.

In an interview with the New York Times, Friar stated that taking time alone has helped her become a better leader, allowing her to reflect on her own goals and values. She also emphasized the importance of setting aside time for yourself, even if it means saying no to other obligations.

She is the co-founder of Ladies Who Launch, a nonprofit that celebrates and empowers women entrepreneurs.

There’s no way I would be an entrepreneur if I wasn’t the eternal optimist. — SARAH FRIAR

As author and entrepreneur Tim Ferriss once said, “Being alone is not the same as being lonely. Being alone is a state of being, while loneliness is a state of feeling. You can be alone and feel lonely, or you can be alone and feel complete.” Taking time alone can be a powerful tool in helping individuals clarify their goals, values, and priorities in life.

Time alone is a superpower that can help individuals figure out what they truly want in life. By spending time in introspection and reflection, individuals can gain greater self-awareness and clarity on their goals and values. As Maya Angelou said, “Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
