The Rise of the ‘Everything Shower’: Benefits for Mental Health

The “Everything Shower” has been gaining popularity on TikTok recently, with the hashtag amassing over 32 million views in the past month alone. This trend involves incorporating self-care practices such as using luxurious cleansers, hair masks, and exfoliating from head to toe in the shower.

Rituals and Habits for Positive Well-being

Clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist Tania Taylor notes that the power of ritual in the “Everything Shower” lies in the commitment to taking time out for oneself, and the process of feeling safe, confident, and comfortable. She also emphasizes the positive effects of rituals, routines, and habits on our well-being.

Opportunities for Self-Compassion and Mindfulness

Psychotherapist and spokesperson for the UK Council for Psychotherapy Ali Ross believes that the “Everything Shower” is a deeply self-compassionate, meditative practice. It encourages individuals to slow down and be attentive and responsive, allowing them to understand where they are at in their day, week, or life.

Physical and Mental Health Benefits

The correlation between poor personal hygiene and diagnoses of anxiety and depression is not uncommon. Conversely, taking care of one’s hygiene through self-soothing rituals like the “Everything Shower” has been recognized as beneficial for mental health. Additionally, touch through physical self-care can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.

Mindfulness and Moderation

While adding the “Everything Shower” to one’s mental health toolkit can be a worthwhile endeavor, it is important to remain mindful and avoid making it too routine or prescriptive. The shower should be one tool in a larger toolkit for mental health, as it can alleviate some stress and tension but not treat more acute mental health issues.

In summary, the “Everything Shower” trend provides opportunities for individuals to take time out for self-care rituals and commit to processes that make them feel safe, confident, and comfortable. Incorporating such practices into one’s routine can be beneficial for mental health and self-compassion, though it should not be the only tool in a larger mental health toolkit.

India’s Finance Minister cites external threats to economic growth

What’s sipping?☕ In an interview at the International Monetary Fund’s Spring Meetings in Washington, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed concerns about external forces posing the biggest threats to India’s economic growth.

💸 She highlighted the risks of higher oil prices and the spillover effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine, which could impact fuel prices and hurt India’s exports.

📉 India’s $3.2 trillion economy has shown signs of fatigue as domestic and foreign demand gets clipped by high-interest rates. Growth in the October-December period eased to 4.4%, from 6.3% in the previous quarter, due to waning consumption and investments.

📊 The IMF has trimmed its growth outlook for India to 5.9% for the current fiscal year from April 1, from the 6.1% forecast in January.

💡 Despite the challenges, Sitharaman credited policy reforms and digitization for keeping the economy buoyant and said a pause in tightening by some countries’ central banks could help growth momentum.

🌧️ Additionally, India’s inflation is easing and a forecast of a normal monsoon could help lower grain and oilseed prices, potentially slowing inflation.
