Transport Yourself to Another Time and Place: The Joy of Reading, by Yoshida Kenko

Yoshida Kenko, a Japanese author, and Buddhist monk from the 14th century, once remarked on the importance of reading books, and his words still ring true today. In a world where we are constantly connected to others through technology, it can be easy to forget the joy and comfort that comes from solitary reading.

Kenko’s quote speaks to the unique experience of reading, where one can connect with people from the past and gain insights into their thoughts and experiences. When we read, we are transported to different times and places, and we can learn from the wisdom of those who have come before us.

Reading also provides an opportunity for introspection and self-reflection. It allows us to escape the noise of the world and spend time alone with our thoughts, as Kenko suggests. In this way, books can be a source of comfort and solace, a way to recharge our batteries and rejuvenate our spirits.

Moreover, reading can broaden our understanding of the world and expand our perspectives. It exposes us to different cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking, fostering empathy and compassion for others. As American author, John Green once said, “Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.”

In conclusion, Yoshida Kenko’s words remind us of the value of reading books. As we navigate an increasingly connected and fast-paced world, we should not forget the joy and comfort that comes from sitting alone with a good book. In the words of Kenko, “It is a most wonderful comfort to sit alone beneath a lamp, book spread before you, and commune with someone from the past whom you have never met.”

Tata Consumer Products shifts focus to own mineral water brands after calling off Bisleri acquisition

🌞 Today, we have some interesting news to share with you regarding Tata Consumer Products. The company’s CEO and managing director, Sunil D’Souza, has announced that Tata Consumer Products will now invest heavily in its own mineral water brands, such as Tata Copper+ and Himalayan, after calling off plans to acquire Bisleri, a leading bottled water brand.

🪣 According to D’Souza, while acquiring Bisleri would have accelerated the company’s plans by three years, it was just a small piece of the company’s bigger food and beverages puzzle. The company has decided to back its own brands, which include Tata Copper+, Tata Gluco+, and Himalayan mineral water, with its vast resources. D’Souza has also stated that Tata Consumer Products has a war chest to acquire other brands in the F&B space but will not overpay for them.

🏃🏻 Tata Consumer Products has been a late starter in the FMCG space and has a lot of catch-ups to do with other leading players such as HUL, Britannia, and ITC. However, the company has an ambitious mandate to scale up quickly in terms of the portfolio of products and distribution.

🫖 The company’s portfolio of products includes tea, coffee, water, RTD beverages, salt, pulses, spices, ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat offerings, breakfast cereals, snacks, and mini meals. Its beverage brands include Tata Tea, Tetley, Eight O’Clock Coffee, Tata Coffee Grand, Himalayan Natural Mineral Water, Tata Copper+, Tata Fruski, and Tata Gluco+. Its food portfolio includes Tata Salt, Tata Sampann, Tata Soulfull, and Tata Q.

🌮 🍹 In March 2022, Tata Consumer’s board approved the demerger of Tata Coffee’s plantation business into TCPL Beverages & Foods, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Consumer Products. It also approved the merger of Tata Coffee’s remaining business, consisting of its extraction and branded coffee business, with Tata Consumer Products.
