Meet the Woman Behind Zoho’s Success: Empowering the Dream with Passion and Perseverance

Good morning,

What’s Sipping? ☕ The company is well known for its online office suite providing Zoho Office Suite, and it competes with Microsoft and Salesforce.

We want to introduce you to Radha Vembu, the senior executive of Zoho Corporation and sister of its founder, Sridhar Vembu. Radha Vembu has amassed a fortune of $2.5 billion and was named the third richest self-made woman in India by Hurun in 2022. She is described as calm and task-oriented, and her philosophy is to stay invisible and let her work do the talking.

Radha Vembu has been instrumental in Zoho’s success, helping the bootstrapped startup reach its peaks. She is the product manager of Zoho Mail and Zoho Workplace and has helped build the common framework that connects all the tools and platforms at Zoho. Her work has been so important to the company that Liz Miller, vice president of the US-based Constellation Research Inc, described her as the physical manifestation of Zoho’s connective framework.

Radha Vembu’s wealth comes from her stakes in Zoho, and she is reportedly looking after the company’s philanthropic activities. She also sits on the board of Go Frugal, a startup run by her other brother Kumar Vembu. She graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) in industrial management in 1997 and is a pillar of strength at Zoho.

Zoho’s work culture is quite popular, and it is one of the three unicorns born out of Tamil Nadu in the last decade. In November 2022, it surpassed $1 billion in annual revenues and remains a privately-funded company. Sridhar Vembu has attributed the company’s success to long-term investment in product research and development and a focus on R&D rather than marketing.

Radha Vembu is an inspiration to women in tech, leading the way for more women to overcome bias and stereotypes. We hope her story motivates young girls to pursue their dreams in the tech industry.

Thinking Big and Small

The quote, “When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small,” highlights the importance of having both a broad vision and a practical approach to achieving one’s goals. It encourages individuals to dream big, set ambitious goals, and think outside the box when planning for the future. However, it also emphasizes the significance of taking small, incremental steps toward progress.

One example of this principle in action can be seen in the story of entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk is known for his ambitious plans to revolutionize the transportation industry with his electric car company Tesla and his plans to colonize Mars with his aerospace company SpaceX. However, he has also emphasized the importance of taking small steps toward achieving these goals. In an interview with TED curator Chris Anderson, Musk stated, “I think it’s important to have a future that is inspiring and appealing. But I think it’s equally important to have a future that is not scary. And I think the biggest concern that people have is that AI will be used to make war. That is the … danger, in my opinion, that is the most pressing.”

This quote highlights Musk’s ability to balance his big-picture thinking with practical steps toward progress. He recognizes that his ambitious plans may seem intimidating to some, but he is also aware of the potential risks and challenges that must be addressed through smaller, more immediate actions.

Another example can be found in the field of education. Teachers and school administrators often have big ideas for improving the educational system and helping students succeed. However, these goals can be overwhelming and difficult to achieve without a focus on small, achievable actions. As an educator and author Jim Knight writes, “Change is often too complex and too systemic to tackle all at once… But if we break down the system and try to change one part of it, we might make progress.”
